Chapter Sixteen
Randi wasn’t happy. She didn’t want to lie to Johnny. Besides, she figured Johnny knew her so well, he’d see right through it. But this is how it had to be. She wished she could figure out a way to gently bring Eleanor out of the closet. But she couldn’t. It had to be Eleanor’s decision and Eleanor’s doing. All Randi could do was wait and try to be as patient as she could be.
They arrived at the diner and Randi instinctively opened Eleanor’s door for her. She refrained, however, from offering her a hand down. Eleanor climbed down a little gracelessly, but she made it.
Randi slid her hands in her pockets as they strode over to meet up with Johnny.
“All in a day’s work, eh, Randi?” he said.
“Yeah. Right. Johnny, this is a friend of mine, Eleanor. We were out having coffee when the call came in so I brought her with me.”
Johnny grinned and extended his hand.
“Friend, huh? Well, any friend of Randi’s is a friend of mine.”
Eleanor took his hand and shook.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Johnny arched an eyebrow toward Randi but didn’t say anything.
They went inside and placed their orders.
“You seem really familiar to me, Eleanor,” Johnny said. “Have we met before?”
“Not exactly. But you and Randi rescued an alligator from my yard not long ago.”
“Oh, yeah. I remember you now. Well, great to see you again.”
Eleanor was silent most of the meal while Johnny and Randi chatted away.
“So, how long do you think we’ll have jobs?” Johnny said.
“I’m not really worried about it. I mean, closing the office on weekends will save some money. I don’t think they’ll be letting anyone go. I, for one, am glad I get to simply be on call on the weekend. It works for me.”
“Yeah. It lets you have coffee and stuff.”
“Exactly.” Randi fought the urge to laugh. She knew Johnny didn’t believe their story for a minute. She was dreading being alone with him. She knew he’d be tenacious about getting to the truth.
Breakfast ended and Johnny shook hands with both of them.
“I’ll see you on Monday,” he said to Randi, then turned to Eleanor. “It was great seeing you again.”
“See ya,” Randi said and she turned to hold the door open for Eleanor. She was about to help her up, but caught Johnny watching them through his rearview mirror. She went around and got in, leaving Eleanor to fend for herself.
When they were in the truck and their doors were closed, Eleanor was the first to speak.
“See? That wasn’t so bad. He thinks we were having coffee.”
“I’m not so sure about that, baby, but we’ll see.”
“You think he knows there’s something between us?”
“I wouldn’t be surprised. Look, I have a bit of a reputation, you know? Or, I did, rather. I guess I still do. No one knows about us, so people still think I’m a player. I just don’t want him to think you were just another nameless woman who happened to be in my bed.
